About Us
What is the Beat Beethoven Run?
The Beat Beethoven Run is a unique racing event that combines sport and the arts in a fun and exciting way: the runners line up, the gun goes off, and our own Peterborough Symphony Orchestra, live and conducted by Michael Newnham, starts playing 50 minutes of selections by Beethoven! The goal is for the runners to make it back to the finish line before the Symphony finishes!
The Beat Beethoven concept is one that has been successfully organized in cities all over North America, from Anchorage to Albequerque, Victoria to Ottawa, and many more. This is your opportunity to see the Peterborough Symphony at its finest in one of Peterborough's most scenic venues!
The race is accurately measured, and will be using ChampionChip timing, ensuring that everyones' race times will be true and almost instantly available.
How long has this race been around?
According to our information, the first Beat Beethoven Run was in Edmonton in 1982. It featured the Edmonton Symphony performing Beethoven’s Ninth!
Are there other races like this?
Yes, Beat Beethoven Runs have been held in Vancouver, Victoria, Anchorage, Tulsa, Saskatoon and other cities. The most popular events in Ontario in the past have been the Ottawa and Kingston races.
Does a local symphony always play at the race?
While many of the other races have used recorded music to motivate the runners, we are happy and proud to have our own Peterborough Symphony Orchestra again playing live at our 2006 Beat Beethoven Run!
